Bishop Cauthen was born in Kershaw, North Carolina in 1887. He received his education at Clinton Junior College, Livingstone College, and Hood Theological Seminary.  For many years he served as the pastor of the Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Norfolk, which was located at the corner of Pulaski Street and Brambleton Avenue. In 1956, he was appointed a Bishop and served in this capacity until his retirement in Mobile, Alabama in 1972. After his retirement, he returned to Norfolk. He died two years later, several days after speaking at a service held by his former congregation to celebrate paying off the church’s mortgage. He was married to Georgia L. Cauthen (1912-1964).  In Norfolk, they resided at 2843 Springfield Avenue. They are interred together at Calvary. They had a daughter, Muriel C Howell and a son, Dr. Joseph D. Cauthen Jr. (1928-1986) who is interred with them.
