Kathy Bonney

Forest Lawn Cemetery
Location: Fir Lawn Block 23 Space 41
(Aug. 6, 1968 – Nov. 22, 1987)

Sadly, Kathy Bonney’s life is notable, not because of her accomplishments, but the tragedy of her death.   Before she had the opportunity to complete any achievements of her own, she was murdered at the age of 19.

Her body was found in November 1987 along the Dismal Swamp Canal after having been shot 27 times. Her father, Thomas Lee Bonney, was later arrested for the crime.  He was sentenced to death in 1988, but the North Carolina Supreme Court voided the death sentence based on evidence that Bonney was mentally incompetent because of mental illness.  However, the murder conviction was upheld and his sentence was later reduced to life in prison.
