Menalcus Lankford

Menalcus Lankford was born on Bowers Plantation near Franklin, Va. on March 14, 1883.  He graduated from The University of Richmond in 1904 and from the University of Virginia’s law school in 1906.  He moved to Norfolk soon after to open up a law practice.  For many years he was a partner in the law firm Wolcott, Wolcott, and Lankford.  Lankford later served as a naval aviation ensign during the First World War.  He successfully ran as a Republican to be the Representative of Virginia’s Second District in the United States Congress in 1929.  He served in this capacity until 1933 when he lost his bid for reelection.  Following his political career, he was appointed to the Norfolk division of the U.S. District Court where he served as a bankruptcy referee until his death in 1937.
