1850's drawing of Craney Island
Battle took place within sight of Hermitage Museum & Gardens
On June 22, 1813 737 men on Craney Island and a few Naval Gunboats in the Elizabeth River defeated a British force of almost 2,500 that attacked by land, and about 45 or 50 boats full of men attacked from the James River. All of this took place within sight of the grounds of the Hermitage. This American victory had a major impact on the War of 1812 and saved Norfolk, Virginia and Portsmouth, Virginia. Join us in celebrating the 200th anniversary of this historic event with a film about the US Navy’s most famous ship’s -- USS Constitution -- which gained its nickname “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812. There is a connection between Old Ironsides and the Battle of Craney Island, and Norfolk in particular. We’re not giving the secret away until movie night!
