John Saunders letter November 20th 1796

                                                                        Fort Norfolk November 20th 1796
Sir
Your letter dated the 10th instant  I have just received by which I observe that there has been a Detachment ordered from West Point for this place.  I shall make it my sole attention to have the barracks in good order for their reception.
We are very much in want of a boat, as the one that has been in use here, has become utterly useless and not safe to venture in.  I have therefore requested the contractor to have one procured.  We are also in want of clothing – particularly coats and shoes.
I find by a letter from Mr. Simmons to Mr. Triplett that he has omitted to forward my pay for October which was entered on the Muster Roll for that Month & transmitted by me.  My being absent at the time when the last Muster went forward was excluded.  I will therefore thank you for, to have my pay remitted for Oct & November.
I have the honor to be
&sir your most obedient servant
John Saunders
Lieutenant

Papers of the War Department 1784 to 1800

Papers of the War Department is a project of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, George Mason University with funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Fire destroyed the War Department office in 1800. For decades historians believed that its files, and the window they provide into the early federal government, had been lost forever. This collection unites copies of the lost files in a digital archive that reconstitutes this invaluable historical resource.
