Walker K. Armistead Letter 1 August 1808

Hoode August 1, 1808

Sir,
I take the liberty of reporting to you the state of the works here and at Norfolk.
The work is progressing rapidly at this place the Bricklayers have entered into Articles to have the No of bricks wanted, in the wall by the last of November. Vessels are employed in conveying stone for the water battery and the masons will commence by the 15th, the carpenters have engaged to have the barracks in readiness by the last of November. Forty laborers are employed and the agent has orders to produce an additional number.

Fort Norfolk
The bricklayers are employed in laying the bricks I have assurances from them that the work shall be finished by the last of October.

Fort Nelson
The wall and closing the rear is completed, and laborers are employed in finishing the earthen part of the parapet.
