Navy Department
August 11, 1848

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 4th inst., enclosing a report from the Engineer Department, in reference to the application of the Bureau of Yards & Docks, for the transfer of Old Fort Norfolk near Gosport Navy Yard, to this Department, for the purpose therein indicated.

When the application was made, it was not known, that the Old Fort would be wanted in the defences of that part of the country. Finding that such is the fact, the application is withdrawn.

I have the honor to be,
Very respectfully,
Your obedient servant
J. Y. Mason

Hon. William L. Marcy
Secretary of War
