Joseph Smith Letter 17 August 1848
Bureau of Yards & Docks
17 August 1848
Commodore,
Your letter of the 16th inst, has been received.
The Magazine must answer for the present, and if it be accessible at half tide, the wharf need not be extended to low water line.
St Helena is considered the best site for a Shell House at our disposal, and not more exposed than other places adjacent; nor is the danger to the property in the Yard, in the event of an explosion, believed to be of serious moment. It is feared however that the appropriation, $1638, based upon the estimate of your predecessor, is not sufficient to erect a suitable building for a Shell House, but I should be glad if you would furnish a plan of such an one as he proposed.
Respectfully,
yr ob serv’t,
Jos Smith
