Commandant John D Sloat Letter 20 September 1849

Commandants Office
Navy Yard Gosport
Sept 20 1849
Sir,
I have received your communication of the 18th inst relating to the transfer of Fort Norfolk to the Navy Department for magazine purposes.
I fear the estimate & plans of the buildings will not be in readiness to accompany my annual report which is required to be sent on the 2nd ???. I shall go on however & do what I can towards it and if it be possible, shall send them on that day. In the meantime I should be pleased to receive plans and estimate prepared by Mr. Sanger.*
Do you design the house intended for the keeper to be of brick or wood.
* as my knowledge of buildings for a Magazine uses is not very extensive & have no one here to consult with.

I am Respectfully, Sir
your obedient servant,
John D Sloat
Commandant

Comm Joseph Smith
Chief of the Burrow of Yards & Docks
Washington
