Commandant John D Sloat Letter 29 June 1850

Commandants Office
Navy Yard Gosport
29 June 1850
Sir,
Enclosed herewith is a copy of the deed of land adjoining old Fort Nelson, upon which, or a part of which, stands the Magazine. It will be seen that no boundaries are given in the deed, but it is believed that the County Surveyor could determine the extent of the Government interest in this land and whether the Magazine is on Government ground or not. The receipt for the purchase money is given, as will be seen to one Thomas Fillebrowne, secretary to the board of Commissions; to this perhaps is Mr. Fillebrowne now a clerk in the Bureau of Provisions & Clothing form whom some information may be obtained.
There is nothing on file in this office at all relating to the property in question, and the deed here with enclosed is also the information I have yet been enabled to obtain touching it.

I am Respectfully, Sir
your obedient servant,
John D Sloat
Commandant

Comm Joseph Smith
Chief of the Burrow of Yards & Docks
Washington
