Commandant John D Sloat Letter 10 August 1850

Commandants Office
Navy Yard Gosport
August 10 1850
Sir,
I have received your letter of the 8th inst, with copy of old Fort Nelson.
It is utterly impossible with the data now in my possession to arrive at the correct boundaries of the magazine ground. And I agree with you that there is no other way to ascertain the boundary of the plat of the ground then but to examine the record &c for which purpose I again request authority to employ a lawyer.
I infer from a note on the sketch of the 18 acres of ground, that you have a copy of the deed for old Fort Nelson, if you have, be pleased to send it to me, as some information may be gleaned from it. The plat received does not to show the scale to which it is drawn sufficiently satisfactorily it says 1/ of an inch equals one foot, I do not know whether 1/4 1/8 or 1/16 of an inch is meant.

I am Respectfully, Sir
your obedient servant,
John D Sloat
Commandant

Comm Joseph Smith
Chief of the Burrow of Yards & Docks
