Commandant S. H. Stringham Letter 11 April 1851

Commandants Office
Navy Yard Gosport
April 11th 1851

Sir,
Mr. Pendegrast the present contractor for stone is willing to commence the delivery of the quantities wanted for the Quay Walls forthwith, at the price name in Doyles contract of last year, viz $2 35/100 per perch for the building and 49 cent per foot for the caping. The building Stone furnish under Doyles contract was of sizes such as that required for the Quay Wall and is much larger than that now under contract for the “Saw Shed” and “Magazine”. It is certainly worth the difference which is only six cents in the perch for the building stone, and as Mr. Penderast is a reliable man; and one who is always prompt in making deliveries, I would recommend procuring it from him.

I am Respectfully,
your obedient servant,
S. H. Stringham
Captain

Comm Joseph Smith
Chief of the Burrow of Yards & Docks
