Joseph Smith Letter 23 June 1852

Bureau of Yards & Docks
23 June 1852

Captain,

I have received your letter of the 21st inst.

The suspension of work upon the Magazine and Keepers House at Fort Norfolk will have to remain until further funds are provided for the completion of those objects. The yard having neglected to ask for any further sums in the estimates furnished for the next fiscal year, none were included in those submitted to Congress from this Bureau and consequently no appropriation will be made at the present session of Congress; you will be please therefore to include the necessary amount in the estimates for 1854 called for by the circular of the 20th ultimo. The Bureau desires to be informed of the cause of the omission to provide for the objects in question, in the last estimates received from the Yard under your Command.

With respect to the Contractors application to deliver the Bricks yet do you under his Contract, you are authorized to receive them on their passing inspection, and use them for Store House No 14 when authorized to be erected provided he will deliver the Bricks at the Yard and wait for payment till the appropriation shall be made by Congress.

Respectfully,
yr ob st,
Jos Smith

Capt. S. L. Breese
