Commandant Samuel L. Breese Letter 19 March 1853

Respectfully referred to the Bureau of Yards and Docks.

by your obedient servant,
Sam. L. Breese
Captain

Civil Engineer’s Office
Navy Yard Gosport
March 19 1853
Sir,
The present and prospective duties pertaining to this office require the services of a writer, and also a draftsman.

The distribution of work at this station being at several different points, at the Yard, Fort Norfolk &c., and the nature of this work requiring close attention, prevents the possibility of my personal application in making the plans that are now required, and the services of a draftsman are especially needed for a few months at least. I would take the liberty of recommending Mr. William Lingleton of this place for this duty. In regard to his pay, I presume if he were only employed for a short time he would demand at least $2.50 per diem.

Mr. Denpry Norh, who has here of been employed on this yard I would recommend as writer at $1.75 per diem.

Very Respectfully,
your obedient servant,
Calvin Brown
Civil Engineer

Capt. Sam S Breese
Commanding Navy Yard
Gosport

Comm Joseph Smith
Chief of the Bureau of Yards & Docks
