Commandant Thomas Dornin Letter 2 July 1857
Commandants Office
Navy Yard Gosport
July 2nd 1857
Sir,
The Bureaus letter of the 26 ultimo ordering the sale of the Old Magazine has been received: and I would beg leave to extend the time prescribed in said letter (twenty days) for removing the materials, as much as two months; and that the purchaser be not confined to working hours, as the Magazine cannot be taken down and the materials removed in the time prescribed, owing to the great quantity of bricks, masonry and other material of which it is composed; purchasers in view of this fact would not give more than half as much as they would were they allowed a reasonable length of time to remove it.
Very Respectfully,
your obedient servant,
Thomas A. Dornin
Commandant
Commodore Joseph Smith
Chief of the Bureau of Yards & Docks
Washington D. C.
