William N. Jeffers Letter 21 July 1875
July 21, 1875
Commodore T. H. Stevens
Commandant
Sir:
The lightning rods for the new Magazine building at Craney Island are complete and will be brought down to Norfolk by an ordinance machinist from the Navy Yard who will superintend their erection.
In the meantime another set will be prepared for the 2nd Magazine now being built.
In this connection please direct a flagstaff to be made for Craney Island, this should be located near the landing, if possible on our own grounds, and be of such a height and placed in such a position as to communicate by signal between Fort Norfolk and the Island.
Respectfully,
Wm N. Jeffers
Chief of the Bureau
