1826 Plan of Norfolk Naval Hospital Grounds

Fort Norfolk History - 1827

In March of 1826 the architect John Haviland produced the Plan of the U. S. Naval Hospital Grounds and Buildings (see above). Then on November 29, 1827 the United States Navy bought a piece of land in Norfolk County adjoining Fort Nelson, being sixty one acres more or less, from Thomas Newton and his wife Margaret. They began building the Naval Hospital in 1827. Then they built the Navy Magazine in 1828.
