Fort Norfolk History - 1806

On February 18, 1806, Thomas Jefferson communicated to the House of Representatives, Henry Dearborn’s February 13, 1806 Report on Fortifications.

In this report the Secretary of War lists and describes the Ports and harbors fortified, along with how much has been spent at each location. These Fortifications include:

1. Portland, District of Maine, Fort Sumner. - $8,559.25

2. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Fort Constitution. - $14,740.22

3. Cape Ann, Massachusetts, No fort completed. -

4. Salem, Massachusetts, unnamed block house, magazine, and battery - $2,593.60

5. Marblehead, Massachusetts, unnamed block house, magazine, and battery - $13,634.91

6. Boston Harbor, Massachusetts, Fort Independence. - $186,195.11

7. Newport, Rhode Island, Forts Adams and Wolcott. - $107,635.24

8. New London, Connecticut, Fort Trumbull. - $14,030.72

9. New York Harbor, Fort Jay. - $100,023.41

10. Mud Island, below Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Fort Mifflin. - $61,361.09

11. Wilmington, Delaware, No fort completed.

12. Baltimore Harbor, Maryland, Fort McHenry. - $95,073.12

13. Annapolis, Maryland, No fort completed. - $268.50

14. Alexandria, District of Columbia, No fort completed. - $2,008

15. Norfolk, Virginia, Fort Nelson. - $20,087.93

16. Ocracok Harbor, North Carolina, No fort completed. -

17. Cape Fear River, North Carolina, Fort Johnston. - $27,826.73

18. Georgetown, South Carolina, No fort completed. - $250

19. Charleston, South Carolina, Forts Moultire, Pinckney and Johnston. - $26,291.11

20. Savannah, Georgia. St. Mary's, Georgia, Fort Green destroyed by 1804 storm. - $1,562 and - $6,669.29

21. New Orleans, Forts St. Louis, St. Charles, and St. Philip.

It should be noted that Fort Norfolk is no longer listed as protecting Norfolk, Virginia. More detail in the report for Norfolk included:
