Company D 3rd Virginia Cavalry

 

August 1863

  1. From Rapidan to Fredersicksburg stopped at 11 AM grazed stayed then balance of the day.  I went to Fredericksburg.  Clear very warm.
  2. Remained in camp near Fredericksburg.  I wrote two letters one to Mary S Phillips and to E T P Pool Dinwiddie Co.
  3. Remained in camp.
  4. Remained in camp.
  5. We moved camp about a mile near to Fredericksburg.
  6. Remained in camp.
  7. Remained in camp near Fredericksburg.  Came up a cloud in the evening rained a little I was put on camp guard.
  8. We remained in camp.  I got a pass to go to Fredericksburg.  I was relieved from camp guard.
  9. Sun.  We remained in camp had preaching at 11 AM prayer meeting at 6 PM.
  10. We remained in camp.  We were paid off for two months.  May and June.

  12. Remained in camp.  I went to Fredericksburg without permission.  I saw two fellows fight.
  13. Remained in camp.  I was put on camp guard at 9 AM had two spies to guard.  Four men for getting drunk.
  14. Remained in camp.  We had orders to keep our horses tied.  No passes granted for fear that would come to leave.  I wrote a letter to L D P Pool Petersburg.
  15. Remained in camp.  I got a pass to go out of camp went nearly to Massaponax church got to camp at tattoo.
  16. Sun Remained in camp.  We had prayer meeting in the morning preaching in the evening.
  17. We remained in camp had a board to condemn undesirable saddles and bridles and other equipments.
  18. We remained in camp.  I washed some clothes.  There was a good deal of horse rasing and restling going on during the day.
  19. We remained in camp the most of my Company was sent on picket.  I was put on camp guard.  Walked Fredericksburg.
  20. We remained in camp.  I was relieved from camp guard.  I then mended my cloths.
  21. We remained in camp.  It was a day set by the President to fast and pray.  We had prayer meeting.
  22. Rgt remained in camp until four PM.  Went off on a scout.  I got a pass to go out of camp.  Went to Guinea Station.  On return found the rgt gone.
  23. I remained in camp.  The regt. returned to camp off a scout.  They captured three Yankees.  The first squad was relieved from picket.
  24. We remained in camp.  Several of the boys came from home.  I received a letter from Bettie P Pool.  I wrote a letter to Bettie.
  25. We remained in camp.  General R. A. Pryor joined us as a private.  We got a hand and serenaded him.  He delivered a very pretty speech.
  26. We remained in camp.  Cloudy very cool.  I received a letter from L. D. P. Pool.  I was put on camp guard at 9 AM.
  27. We remained in camp.  Moderate warm.  I was relieved from camp guard.  We got a band and had music.  Got a speech out of Burkly, one out of Caring to.  I wrote two letters to L.E.P. Pool.
  28. Rgt started from camp at 2 PM to go on a scout toward Bowling Green.  Moderate warm and clear.
  29. I was put on camp guard.  Rgt returned to camp at 6 PM.  Moderate warm, clear the first part of the day rained a little in the evening.
  30. Sun and we remained in camp.  Moderate warm clear.  We had preaching at 4 PM.  I received a letter from S S of Sussex County, Va.
  31. We remained in camp.  Moderate warm and clear.  Rgt. inspection.  General R. A. Pryor was put on camp guard.
